Information

Spetses is a small historic island located right of the entrance of the Argolic Bay, just 1.5 miles from Ermionida and 50 miles from Piraeus. It is an island full of pine trees this is why from antiquity to the early Byzantine centuries it was also called "Piteoussa". Later the Venetians called it “Isola de Spezzie”, (meaning the island with the nice scent) due to the abundance of aromatic plants that can be found here. The present name of the island is a variation of the word "Piteoussa" or the word "Spezzie".

Spetses has an interesting history, especially in modern times. The island passed successively from the domination of the Venetians to the Turks and then to the jurisdiction of the new Greek state. Over the centuries the maritime tradition determined the development of the island, while the fighting spirit of the residents shaped the history of events. The sailors and captains of Spetses have played a leading role in the years of the Greek Revolution (1821-1832), while the place had already been destroyed two times in the last century due to the revolutionary struggle against the Ottoman state.

While approaching the island by ship, you will see a beautiful landscape with pine-covered slopes that go all the way down to the coastline and embrace the beautiful town of Spetses. Poseidonio Hotel stands out because of its size but also because of its elegant neoclassical architecture. Throughout the town you will see Neoclassical two-storey houses with colored windows and doors, small balconies and tiled roofs.

Colorful bougainvillea color the walls of mansions creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. The circulation of vehicles is prohibited; you will enjoy a walk from Dapia to the old port on foot or in a carriage. You will see the mansions of the beach and the traditional shipyards, you will dive in the crystal clear waters and have a meal with friends at one of the restaurants. All in all, you will enjoy the small pleasures that will rejuvenate your body and soul.

It is not a coincidence that Spetses is such a popular destination especially for the Athenians. Even a short weekend on Spetses is enough to take you away from the the daily routine of the city. The warm welcoming spirit of the locals will make your stay there unforgettable, while the excellent infrastructure of the island can meet the needs and desires of the most demanding visitor.
